Questions?

What might I expect in my first counselling session?

Most of us feel a bit anxious when we come to meet or speak with a counsellor for the first time.
It is my goal to help you feel comfortable. I will ask you general questions about what issues you are facing and about what you hope to get out of our work together. I will also describe my background and my counselling approach and answer any questions you may have. We will also complete intake forms.

How much time does counselling take?

A typical counselling session is 60 minutes in length although some clients book for 90.
Counselling is a highly personal experience and the frequency of sessions can vary. Often people
wish to begin with weekly sessions and then schedule them less frequently as they begin to feel progress.

It is my goal to work with you to reach your objectives in a timely manner. I suggest you commit to a minimum of 3 to 6 sessions; at that point, we can evaluate the next steps in your treatment.

How can I fully engage in my counselling sessions?

Participate, set expectations, open up, put down your guard, and remember it is a process. With kindness to yourself, resolve to move through difficult sensations and emotions. Effective therapy requires vulnerability within the safety of professional support.

Is counselling confidential?

As your counsellor, I am bound by the Code of Ethical Conduct as outlined by my professional organization, the Canadian Counselling, and Psychotherapy Association. As such, I am obligated
to treat as confidential all information I obtain in the course of our work together.
However, confidentiality is limited in some circumstances which can be discussed at our first session.

How do I book an appointment?

Please see the Appointments & Fees page. You can book both the initial phone consultation and a regular appointment using the online booking tool. You can select any time that is shown as available.

What about emergencies?

If you are in immediate crisis, please call 911 or go to your nearest hospital emergency department
to see a psychiatrist on call.
